Descript review

Edit podcasts and videos by editing the transcript — delete a word from the text, the word disappears from the audio. The closest thing to magic in creator tooling.

Descript is the editing tool of choice for interview podcasters and talking-head video creators. Edit by text, delete filler words ('um', 'uh') with one click, and use Overdub to clone your voice for last-minute corrections. Spanish accent transcription accuracy lags English, and the credit system on AI features burns fast.

Full review

Descript was founded in 2017 by Andrew Mason (Groupon co-founder) with a radical premise: what if you could edit audio and video by editing text? Open a project, get an instant transcript, delete a sentence from the transcript, and that sentence vanishes from the audio. It still feels like a magic trick six years later. The editing model is what makes Descript indispensable for interview podcasters and tutorial creators. A 60-minute interview that would take 2–3 hours to edit in a traditional NLE takes 30–45 minutes in Descript. The 'Remove Filler Words' feature deletes every 'um', 'uh' and awkward pause across the whole episode in one click — easily the single highest-ROI feature in podcast editing software. Overdub is the other distinctive feature: train it on 10 minutes of your voice, then type corrections directly into the transcript and Descript generates them in your voice. Useful for fixing misstatements, mispronounced names, or product details that changed post-recording. Not yet good enough for full narration replacement, but excellent for surgical edits. Video editing capabilities have caught up dramatically since 2023 — multi-track, transitions, and AI-powered B-roll suggestion. It's not Adobe Premiere, but it's enough for 90% of creator output. Studio Sound (AI audio cleanup) is genuinely impressive and replaces a $200/year third-party tool for most podcasters. Limitations are real: Spanish transcription accuracy drops noticeably for strong Latin American accents, AI feature credits run out faster than expected on the $16 Creator plan, and the Trustpilot 3.2/5 reflects ongoing bug and billing complaints.

Pros

  • +Text-based editing reduces interview podcast post-production time by 50–70%.
  • +'Remove Filler Words' one-click feature is uniquely valuable for podcasters.
  • +Studio Sound AI cleanup is genuinely good — replaces a separate $200/year tool.
  • +Overdub voice cloning works well for surgical corrections (mispronounced names, product updates).
  • +Real-time collaborative editing (Google Docs-style) for team workflows.

Cons

  • Spanish transcription accuracy drops on strong Latin American accents — needs more manual cleanup than English.
  • AI feature credits run out fast on the $16 Creator plan — heavy users move to Pro ($40/mo) or beyond.
  • Overdub voice cloning sounds artificial in blocks longer than 10–15 seconds.
  • Not suitable for complex video production — no advanced color grading, limited VFX.
  • Occasional sync issues between transcript and underlying media — improving but still present.

Best for

  • Interview podcasters who currently spend 2–3 hours editing every episode.
  • Course creators producing talking-head video content without a video editor.
  • Solo content marketers publishing weekly podcasts and YouTube videos.
  • Journalists and writers who need fast, accurate transcription of audio interviews.

Verdict

If you produce conversational audio or video content weekly — podcasts, interviews, tutorials, course modules — Descript is the highest-ROI single tool you can add to your stack in 2026. The Spanish transcription weakness matters less than the time savings. For complex video production or polished cinematic output, you still need a traditional NLE in addition.

Trustpilot data (used in final score)

Frequently asked questions

Is Descript better than CapCut or Premiere for video editing?

Different tools, different jobs. Descript wins for talking-head conversational video and podcasts where transcript-based editing is faster. CapCut wins for short-form social and mobile editing. Premiere wins for cinematic, complex video production. Most creators end up using Descript + one other tool, not Descript alone.

How accurate is Descript's transcription in Spanish?

Around 85–90% accurate on neutral Spanish, dropping to 75–82% on strong Latin American accents (Chilean, Argentine, Caribbean). English transcription is 95%+ accurate on clean audio. For Spanish-language production, plan for 15–25% more cleanup time than English workflows.

How much does Descript cost in 2026?

Free: 1 hour transcription/month, watermarked exports. Creator: $16/mo for 10 hours transcription + 30 min Overdub. Pro: $40/mo for 30 hours + 2 hours Overdub + Studio Sound. Enterprise: custom. Annual billing saves 20%.

What is Overdub and is it ethical to use?

Overdub clones your voice using ~10 minutes of source audio so you can type text and have it spoken in your voice. It's tied to your account and consent-verified. Ethical use: fixing your own mistakes, last-minute updates, name corrections. Unethical: cloning someone else's voice without consent (which Descript actively prevents).
